Upper South Island Reactive Support

Overview

What we're doing

Transpower is carrying out a programme of work to provide more voltage stability to the upper South Island region.  That programme includes the following projects:

  • One 75 Mvar capacitor at Islington 220 kV in 2008
  • One +150/-75 Mvar Static Var Compensator (SVC) at Islington 220 kV in 2009
  • One +/-40 Mvar Static Synchronous Compensator at Kikiwa 220 kV in 2009
  • Reactive Power Controller (RPC) at Islington in 2010.

Why we're doing it

This project will provide greater reactive support to meet the reactive power demands of the connected load following a power system fault.
