Consultation - Archive

Since October 2004 Transpower has consulted on the potential effects of a proposed new transmission line from Whakamaru to Auckland. More recently this has focused on the new elements associated with the amended proposal. In particular a:

  • transition station and eventually a 400/220 kV substation at Brownhill Road
  • new cable route from this transition station to Pakuranga substation
  • replacement 220 kV substation at Pakuranga.

Consultation has now been completed. Issues raised during consultation have been considered by Transpower and amendments made or original proposals confirmed.

The next stage is to commence formal proceedings under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA). To do this Transpower lodged “Notices of Requirement” with seven affected councils on 28 May 2007. The seven affected councils are:

  • Franklin District Council
  • Manukau City Council
  • Matamata-Piako District Council
  • South Waikato District Council
  • Taupo District Council
  • Waipa District Council
  • Waikato District Council

On 09 August 2007, Cabinet Minister, Hon Pete Hodgson intervened in this part of the project.  Effectively this means that the Government has ‘Called In’ Transpower’s proposal to build an electricity transmission line between Whakamaru and Auckland, and appoint an independent Board of Inquiry to oversee the Resource Management Act (RMA) process.
