Transpower is investigating adding automatic synchronisation points to selected substations within its network. Automatic synchronisation allows the process to be carried out remotely and quickly, thereby reducing the impact of the outage.
During an outage, parts of the transmission system may become islanded (electrically separated and operate independently from the rest of the system). To reconnect the islanded part of the grid to the rest of the system, manual synchronisation is performed. This requires on-site attendance at selected substations, and can sometimes require the islanded section to be de-energised. As it takes time to travel to and access the relevant substation, this adds to the time taken to restore power.
