The Transmission Code of Practice (TCOP) sets out our technical planning requirements to ensure the grid’s design and development is in accordance with Good Electricity Industry Practice.
It draws together the planning requirements for key technical areas as selected and jointly agreed by both Transpower and industry representatives.
The TCOP (previously known as the Transmission Code) covers six technical areas
In addition to the TCOP, there is a supporting document – the Technical Commentary. The Technical Commentary provides more in-depth information and explanation of the technical areas covered within the TCOP. The two documents are complementary and should be read together.
The development of the documents was supported by a technical working group, who had the responsibility of providing technical input, challenge and industry knowledge into the process. We thank the Technical Working Group for their assistance for their input and candour in the successful development of the TCOP and the associated Technical Commentary.
With the publication of the TCOP, the Technical Working Group has completed its work. We will continue to develop the TCOP, and will seek to re-establish a technical working group as the need arises.
Information relating to the Technical Working Group and the process of developing the TCOP and technical Commentary are provided below.
We established a Steering Group in November 2008 to produce a Transmission Code – a set of technical planning requirements that we would apply to ensure the transmission grid remains resilient and fit for purpose, and consistent with good industry practice.
The Steering Group (mostly industry chief executives) oversaw and advised on the programme. A Working Group of industry technical experts worked with our engineers and consultants on the development of the document, providing technical input, technical challenge and industry knowledge.
The newly named TCOP is consistent with the Rules and Regulations and is complemented and informed by Transpower’s technology strategies such as Transmission Tomorrow and other public documents. It integrates with our long term asset management strategy.
