Wellington Region - Implosive Repairs on Conductors

Overview

What we're doing

Implosive Repairs on Conductors

As part of our routine maintenance of transmission lines around Wellington, we are undertaking implosive repairs to the aluminium conductors (wires) on some transmission lines.

Implosive repairs involve the attachment of explosive sleeves to damaged conductors. The resulting detonation fuses and repairs the damaged aluminium.

The following lines are involved:

  • Bunnythorpe–Wilton A
  • Central Park–Wilton B

Why we're doing it

Over time, aluminium conductor can begin to fray and deteriorate at some points along its length. Use of an implosive fitting completely repairs the damaged area and ensures the conductor continues to play a reliable part in New Zealand’s national grid.
