Grid Development Strategy

To ensure a secure electricity supply into the future, the National Grid must continue to be developed and extended to meet new patterns of demand and to provide for existing and new generation.

Transpower uses a long term development strategy to provide a framework within which to consider and propose upgrades to the National Grid. The outlook term of this strategy - up to 40 years - is selected to match the life of transmission assets which is of the order of 30-60 years.

Transmission 2040

Transpower launched Transmission 2040 - the process to refresh its long term Grid Development Strategy in August 2008.

In April 2009, Transpower’s review of the project resulted in changes to its scope and programme.  View the original project scope and process:

The revised project will deliver a portfolio of high-level strategies in late 2009.  The detailed strategies and tactics will now become part of Transpower’s business-as-usual processes and documentation including the Transmission Code, the Annual Planning Report, and the Asset Management Plan.

The timeline for the process now is as follows:

Stakeholder Engagement

We have consulted with a wide variety of stakeholders to date, and have incorporated their feedback into Transpower's high level strategies. We will invite stakeholder feedback early next year after the publication of Transpower’s draft high level strategies and scenarios documents.
