Lower Waitaki Reliability
Overview
What we're doing
Network Waitaki, Alpine Energy and key electricity users in the Lower Waitaki Valley have been working with Transpower to help find a solution to meet growing electricity demand in the region.
Our work to date has helped identify three possible options:
- Construct a new switching station (like a substation) at Glenavy and install equipment at Oamaru substation (known as the basic upgrade option).
- Upgrade the existing Waitaki to Glenavy and Oamaru to Glenavy lines and construct a new switching station at Glenavy (known as the secure upgrade option).
- Build a new 110 kV regional supply line from Livingstone to Oamaru and construct a new switching station at Glenavy (known as the new regional supply line option).
Why we're doing it
Capacity of our regional network is now near its limit and the forecast is that electricity use in the Lower Waitaki Valley may double within 10 years. Much of this growth is through increased irrigation together with the possibility of a new cement plant near Oamaru.
