Kaitimako Transmission Reinforcement

Overview

What we're doing

Transpower is proposing to increase its transmission capacity to the Western Bay of Plenty (Tauranga and Mount Maunganui) by:

  • converting the 110 kV Kaitimako–Tarukenga circuit to operate at 220 kV; and
  • installing new 220/110 kV interconnecting transformers at Kaitimako.

Why we're doing it

By 2010, an outage of one of the Kaitimako–Tarukenga circuits (and the subsequent switching out of the Kaitimako–Te Matai circuit) will overload the other and cause low voltages at Kaitimako, Tauranga and Mount Maunganui.
