Lower South Island Grid Reliability Work
Overview
What we're doing
Transpower has proposed providing more capacity in its 220 kV and 110 kV networks in the lower South Island area by:
- connecting Gore substation to the existing 220 kV North Makarewa–Three Mile Hill line
- installing new 220/110 kV transformers at Gore, and replacement transformers at Invercargill and Roxburgh
- installing a series capacitor on one circuit of the North Makarewa–Three Mile Hill line to better balance power flows into Southland
- installing special protection schemes on the 220 kV and 110 kV network.
Why we're doing it
This project will help reinforce the regional 110 kV network in the Southland area which is expecting increased growth through dairying and mining in particular. The project will also help reinforce the 220 kV network into Southland during dry periods when low inflows restrict generation from Manapouri.
