Most of the transmission lines belonging to Transpower pass over land that belongs to other parties. The Electricity Act 1992 gives Transpower the right to enter such land to inspect, maintain and operate the transmission lines.
Since January 1988, Transpower has bought easements over land where new transmission lines are being built. Compensation is negotiated with the landowner but if negotiation fails, Transpower can apply to the Minister of Lands to have the land taken under the Public Works Act.
Transpower generally builds all new transmission lines and other plant for customers who are prepared to pay for the new investment.
More safety information is available in the Landowners and Occupiers booklet. This gives detailed information on safety hazards, what you can and can’t do close to transmission lines, and compliance with safety limits on the proximity of buildings, trees and other structures.
Information on developing land near existing high voltage transmission lines can be found in the Development Guide. The guide looks at the impact of lines on development, and how development can adversely affect the lines themselves. It is aimed at planning practitioners, local authorities, developers and landowners.
