Overview

The Benmore substation is at the southern end of Lake Benmore in the Waitaki Valley. It supplies power to both the South Island's AC system and the HVDC link to the North Island.

The building to house the new Pole 3 equipment- the valve hall - will be constructed alongside the existing HVDC buildings near the front of the substation

The construction of Pole 3 has special challenges as it will be undertaken in a live, operating substation. It cannot interfere with the functioning of Pole 2 or the AC switchyards by producing dust, too much heat or using tall equipment.
